Parking and traffic violations at Boeing Road cause concerns

The Embassy which is situated next to a computer skills school, is alleged to be using the empty lot as a parking and processing area.

A resident has raised concerns about traffic violations caused by the Zimbabwean consulate visitors at 9 Boeing Road West.

The embassy, situated next to a computer skills school, allegedly uses the empty lot as a parking and processing area.

The allegations include a lack of provision for parking for Zimbabwean nationals by the consulate and causing chaotic traffic on the road.

Cars stopping without warning nearly caused many accidents.

Supporting the resident’s statement is Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys, who added some people use the walls and surrounding vegetation as a toilet.

“Our by-laws do not allow illegal business on the pavements or parking on the traffic islands, but we have seen pop-up businesses set up on our pavements from people selling food to photographers.

“The local EMPD and SAPS are hard-pressed to contain the overwhelming pressure of managing and removing the mess left behind.”

The councillor said she has tried on numerous occasions to discuss the matter with the consulate but has yet to be successful.

Other concerns included public safety and security.

“The surrounding area is used as a toilet, which is a health hazard. The congestion caused by illegally parked vehicles on Bradford Road and Boeing Road West is also a public safety hazard,” added Humphreys.

“I can only request that the embassy provides its own parking space or move to a more suitable location,” she added.

In response to a media enquiry sent by the Bedfordview and Edenvale News, the consulate said they were open to a meeting with Humphreys to discuss the raised allegations at her ‘earliest’ convenience.
