Local young people register to vote for the upcoming elections

Gauteng recorded the largest voting population at 6.4 million voters, followed by Kwazulu-Natal at 5.7 million, and the Eastern Cape at 3.4 million.

Young people are speaking up on the importance of registering to vote as the anticipation for the election date announcement grows.

Eleni Kruger (16): Young people need to vote to have a voice in the system. We must vote to have a better future and to make a positive impact on the next generation.

The Electoral Commission has expressed gratitude to the millions of South Africans participating in the registration weekends for the forthcoming national and provincial elections.

Nischay Moodliar (18): Voting for me feels more than a civil duty. In the next 30 years, we will be the ones living here, therefore we must ensure our voices are heard and that we matter.

During the past two weekend voter registration campaigns the IEC has recorded a growth of 1.2 million on the voters’ roll.

According to the Electoral Commission, over two million citizens interacted with the Electoral Commission, with 22% being new entrants on the voters’ roll.

Kyra le Sueur (19): Being in a position of power is a huge responsibility, therefore it is important to know that when we give power to someone, they will make the right decisions for the country. This is why I have registered to vote.

Notably, 77% of new registrations are individuals under 29 years old.

Alexi Salamousas (17): I will register to vote as I believe it contributes to a better South Africa and better living conditions and opportunities for all, which is what the next generation needs.

Additionally, the online registration portal is widely used by females and young persons under 29.

Cikizwa Mbatha (17): The youth have to get involved and vote to improve the state of our country.

Voter registration remains open until the proclamation of the election date.
