Bedfordview learner who died during festive season obtains five distinctions

The Bedfordview learner Declan Murphy died on December 28 following what has been described as an "unfortunate accident" while on holiday with his family.

The late Declan Murphy (19), who wrote his IEB matric finals in 2023, attained five distinctions.

The Bedfordview learner died in an unfortunate accident while on holiday with his family in the Cape on December 28.

It is understood that Murphy sustained serious injuries to the head.

College head David Jeffrey at St Benedict’s College expressed his condolences to the family and friends of Murphy.

“Declan was a bright and promising member of our school community, and his untimely passing in December has left a void in the class of 2023. In honour of his memory, we acknowledge his contributions to our school. He was an all-rounder.”

Murphy played provincial water polo and was awarded full colours for both water polo and rugby as well as half colours for swimming.

He was also awarded academic full colours, the Bilingualism Award, and the Silver Award for Overall Dux for his academic and extramural excellence.

He also received the Head Boy Award in recognition of a leader who has performed his duties diligently and conscientiously.
