Local reader writes letter to City and GDE

Kempton Park needs high schools. It's been on all Ward IDPs since before 2016.

Dear Dr Mashazi

This “planned satellite school” came to my attention at the beginning of November 2023.

Currently, the area is being cleared to place 25 temporary classes for just under 800 learners, in time for the 2024 Grade 8 intake on January 15.

I require some clarity:

• Please clarify the ownership of this land.

• Is CoE City Planning/building control aware of this project?

• Was any permission given to GDE for using this land for 25 temporary starter packs?

• Is CoE City Planning aware that a brick and mortar school is planned for this same property?

• Were any building plans submitted?

Meanwhile, 5km away stands an abandoned school, 90% completed, that was planned to have been completed by the 2018 intake.

As far as I know, R2.1m was budgeted for this school.

Completion of this school (aka Kembirch) will alleviate the current uproar in Kempton Park, regarding space for Grade 8 learners in an actual school instead of a container/starter pack classes.
