Elphin Lodge plays host to happiness and creativity

Art and craft group boasts 23 creative members who meet weekly.

The Elphin Lodge Art and Craft Group is one of the happiest groups in the retirement village.

Started some years ago at the Rand Aid-run village, the group initially had fewer than 10 members.

Today, it boasts 23 creative souls who meet every Tuesday morning to do watercolour or acrylic painting, knitting, hand-sketched card-making and even embroidery.

“New residents have bravely come down and joined us and learnt that members can do whatever they want, without anyone looking over their shoulder to make sure they do things ‘correctly’.”

She said members help each other learn by experimenting with various mediums.

“A few months ago, we decided to try the acrylic pouring method, which was so much fun but messy.”
Sella said that being retired means they can now learn a new hobby, make new friends and enjoy coffee, cake or biscuits with people their age.

“We have the same memories, the same experiences at a time that was different to what the younger generation is living through today.

“We might need a bigger venue the way the group is growing.”
