Bedfordview CPF gives advise on what to do if you are involved in a car crash

The Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF) has provided a step by step guide on what to do when a car accident has occurred.

Car accidents are traumatic and frustrating experiences, however, knowing what to do in such a situation can make a difference.

The Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF) has shared the following tips on what to do should you find yourself in a similar situation.
The first thing to do is to stop immediately as required by law.

Followed by checking for injuries, BCPF advised not hesitating to contact emergency services. If someone is injured the accident must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Obtain a case number for insurance purposes.

Also exchange names, addresses and contact information with other drivers, passengers and any witnesses present at the scene of the accident.

It is crucial to remain calm and avoid admitting liability. The insurance companies and authorities will determine the responsibility.

Contact your insurance and adhere to the guidance and advice they will provide.
If you or any passengers seek medical attention keep detailed records for future claims or legal action.

Follow these guidelines on how to gather evidence – show how vehicles are placed relative to the roadway and any significant landmarks.
Capture a wide-angle view to show the full scene and photograph all sides of each involved vehicle or trailer.

Document damages from different angles for clarity, photograph license disks, and number plates and take note of the model or car maker.

If there are police cars, ambulances, or tow trucks make sure to document that as well.

Document road signs, obstructions or other relevant features.

Do not forget to take photos or make note of driving licenses, IDs or business cards of involved parties.
