New EMPD building under construction in Northmead
The project is expected to be completed by June next year.
As part of the Ekurhuleni metro’s efforts to accelerate service delivery in communities, a state-of-the-art EMPD precinct is under construction in Northmead at a cost of R48.2m.
According to metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, the Building Control Department received a building plan application for the erection of a new EMPD precinct on this site on July 9, 2018. The application was approved in June last year.
“Construction began in the 2019/20 financial year and was halted during the Covid-19 lockdown.
“Work has again commenced and is reaching its final stages of completion,” he explained, adding that the work is regularly inspected to ensure it complies with the approved plans.

The facility is equipped with offices, a traffic fines payment office, a vehicle impound, an accident complaints office and bylaw and crime prevention operations.
The breakdown of expenditure for each financial year is: R5m (2019/20), R1m (2020/21), R9.2m (2021/22), R15m (2022/23) and R18m (2023/24).
Dlamini said the EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit (East) and children’s traffic training offices are still on the same site where the new precinct is being erected.
The project is expected to be completed by June.
