ActionSA calls for the removal of EFF MMCs in council

ActionSA, Ekurhuleni Caucus leader, Siyanda Makhubo said whilst the City fails to deliver basic services, the puppet Mayor continues to be led by the EFF which claims to care for the poor but governs solely via patronage networks.

The battle for leadership in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has been brewing for months.

Over the past few months, political parties have expressed their concerns about how the EFF leadership is running the CoE.

ActionSA wrote to Ekurhuleni executive mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana, requesting him to urgently make changes to his mayoral committee to ‘save the city from total collapse’.

The party’s Ekurhuleni caucus leader, Siyanda Makhubo said whilst the CoE fails to deliver basic services, the ‘puppet mayor’ continues to be led by the EFF which claims to care for the poor but governs solely via patronage networks.

“EFF leadership make decisions not in favour of serving residents,” Makhubo said.

He said ActionSA feels the mayor should take action in terms of the MMC of Finance Nonkululeko Dunga, who in October was embroiled in a deadly blue light crash.

“Dunga is yet to answer whether he fitted a private vehicle with blue lights. Added to this, he also facilitated new security tenders worth billions despite a council resolution to adopt insourcing instead.”

“The new MMC for Waste Management, Leshaka Manamela, is currently overseeing a department which is failing to collect waste.

“This is after he was fired as the MMC of Energy, Water and Sanitation in October when ActionSA wrote to Ngodwana to remove him for poor performance,” said Makhubo.

GCN asked the mayor in October about keeping Manamela in such a critical position.

The mayor then commented that Manamela was capable and qualified to handle this position.

“Manamela is qualified to handle his current position. He was moved to this position based on his expertise shown in his previous leadership position,” said Ngodwana at the time.

The MMC for Energy, Water and Sanitation, Thembi Msane, also came under fire.

Regular water outages continue to occur across Ekurhuleni, and in some areas, water tankers have not been deployed, as allegations are rife that this is a result of service providers not being paid by the CoE.

“Residents are running out of patience with the increasing number of water outages and leaks in the city,” said Makhubo.

An email of enquiry was sent to the CoE and mayoral office for comment.

The mayoral office acknowledged the email.

No comment was received from his office or CoE at the time of going to print.
