Hawks arrest suspects at OR Tambo for alleged drug trafficking

The suspects are employees of various companies operating at OR Tambo International Airport, including two who are ACSA employees.

The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) confirmed that a special joint operation, which included officers from the Directorate of Priority Crimes Investigation (also known as the Hawks) resulted in the identification and apprehension of five individuals suspected of drug trafficking.

The suspects are employees of various companies operating at OR Tambo International Airport, including two who are ACSA employees.

Jabulani Khambule, the regional GM for ACSA’s airport cluster, which includes the airport, praised the Hawks and the ACSA team that was involved in the operation.

He noted that the ongoing collaboration between ACSA and law enforcement agencies continues to yield excellent results.

“ACSA and SAPS are dedicated to making our national key points, which include our airport network, safe for all our passengers.

“We have raised our level of alertness, particularly as we head towards the festive season, which is typically accompanied by an increase in the level of illicit trade,” said Khambule.

The matter was handed to the SAPS for further investigation. The suspects made an appearance in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on November 17.

At the time of going to print, the outcome of the court appearance was not known.
