Police warns shoppers to be vigilant this Black Friday

Police advise residents to take care of their valuable and personal information this Black Friday.

With the recent increase in crime incidents and the approach of the festive season, local police urge shoppers to remain vigilant.

The Bedfordview SAPS corporate communications officer, Sergeant Lillian Modiga, has warned of possible scams during this time with Black Friday taking place on November 24.

She advised carrying as little cash as possible and using internet or cellphone banking as alternatives. Modiga also cautioned shoppers to be on the lookout for scammers, especially with online purchases.

“Only make payment if the site is legit and secured, when in doubt don’t go ahead with the purchase. If it looks too good to be true, it usually is.

“Don’t give out your credit card or online account information to strangers,” she warned.

She also advised shoppers to be aware of crime opportunities at all times.

“Verifying a site before making a purchase is important a lot of people have been scammed online because they failed to verify a site,” she explained.

She urged people to guard their valuables when going to the malls and shopping centres.

Things to keep in a secure place include cellphones, car keys, bank cards and money.

“Do not place your handbags on your shopping trollies. Your purchases or personal belongings should be in the car boot. Make sure that your car is locked at all times.”
