City addresses vandalism at Horwoods’ Farm

“The adjustment in security personnel numbers was undertaken by the EMPD."

The City of Ekurhuleni confirmed that it is aware of vandalism at Horwoods’ Farm and that security personnel has been reduced.

This comes after Ward 18 Ald Heather Hart raised concerns about allegations of vandalism at the municipal property at the start of October.

A door at one of the park’s ablution facilities was left broken, which Hart led to her calling for greater security.

The calls for increased security came after Hart informed Bedfordview and Edenvale News that the number of security staff at the property was reduced from three to one.

Although it is not the main door to the ablutions, the damaged door was meant to keep the general public out of the service area of the building.

CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said vandalism at Horwoods Farm has been noted.

He said the city was aware of the damaged lock and the incident is being attended to.

To prevent further vandalism, Dlamini said the city is evaluating and implementing initiatives at the park.

“These efforts include reviewing the adequacy of security personnel and exploring enhanced security measures,” said Dlamini.

When the News visited the park on November 4, the door was still damaged. Dlamini said a replacement process is underway and has already been initiated.

“The adjustment in security personnel numbers was undertaken by the EMPD. The policing department continuously undertakes security assessments,” said Dlamini.

“The arrangement of shifts and the continuous presence of security personnel are subject to ongoing reviews to ensure the effectiveness of park safety measures.”
