Donated specialised wheelchairs improve local lives

The donation was made possible by FNB raising the necessary funds.

Three beneficiaries received specialised wheelchairs after a donation to the Edenvale-based National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) in South Africa.

The donation of the new wheelchairs happened on October 25 and was made possible with the support of FNB’s finance department.

It was the second time FNB had donated to the NCPD.

The beneficiaries were 13-year-old Noluthando Balepile from the Vumandalo Centre in Delmas, nine-year-old Siphesihle Rose Seshoka from Riverside, Johannesburg, and 23-year-old Mbulelo Boyo Ngengebula from Korekile Home for CP Children in Westonaria.

A senior manager at the council, Dannie Marais, responsible for programmes and projects, said this year’s donation by FNB was bigger than last year’s.

In 2023, they donated two wheelchairs.

When assisting beneficiaries, the NCPD uses Theuns Venter of Medop CC, which conducts assessments and supplies wheelchairs for beneficiaries.

“We are grateful for Medop’s services because the assessments are intense. We provide Theuns with lists of hundreds of individuals we try and match up with sponsorship,” said Dannie.

Representatives from FNB said that a team of volunteers helped to raise the funds.

They said it was humbling to see what was achieved and were happy to be part of the handover.

NCPD’s disability information co-ordinator Fanie Swanepoel thanked all the sponsors for their help because the wheelchairs provided the beneficiaries greater independence.
