Greenstone drummer sets sights on the US after big victory

In terms of drummers, James identified several that he looks up to. They are Luke Holland, Tony Royster and Gregg Hutchins.

Greenstone resident and drummer James Bell is off to America following his award-winning performance at the SA Championships of Performing Arts (SAcopa).

The championships were held between September 29 and October 7.

To compete James needed to excel in several qualifiers both regionally and provincially.

Speaking about his time on stage at the championships James said it was just him and the judges. He said it was a great experience, one where he did not feel nervous.

Greenstone resident and drummer James Bell won five gold medals and was also presented with the grand champion and overall trophy award.at the SA Championships of Performing Arts (SAcopa).

James won five medals for the five songs that he played in the contemporary, Jazz, variety, original and EDM categories.

He was also presented with the grand champion and overall trophy award.

“Leading up to this point in my life, it was probably the most important day of my life,” he said.

During his time as a drummer, he has done numerous performances and qualifiers where he not only excelled but gained confidence.

James’ passion for music is something which comes naturally.

With parents and family who played instruments, James said he was surrounded by music growing up.

“I remember watching music DVDs with my dad when I was younger and one thing that always stood out for me was the drummer and their skill,” said James.

He said at the age of five, while his mom was in a musical instrument shop getting her guitar repaired, James saw a drum kit and decided to try it out.

After playing the drums, he realised he enjoyed the instrument and wanted to pursue his interest further. At the age of seven, he took up drumming lessons.

James said one of the bands that he admires for their production of music is Metallica.

“Their production of music is very smart. I love their personality, their music and Lars Ulrich their drummer is extremely good.”

In terms of drummers, James identified several that he looks up to. They are Luke Holland, Tony Royster and Gregg Hutchins.

“Greg, because of his marching band history, has motivated me to do more linear and percussion drumming as these skills are necessary to play at fast speeds.

“Luke’s ability to play the double bass and focus on numerous tasks at once is unbelievable and something I admire while Tony’s ability to play the drums seamlessly with ease is a skill level I hope to achieve.”

With his sights set on America, James said he feels excited but slightly nervous.

He will be travelling to the USA for the first time.

“I am trying to balance things between having fun and taking it seriously,” explained James.

“I would like to play for a band and I am also hoping to get sponsored, hopefully by Yamaha or Tama one day.”

Proud father Jonathan said his sons’ achievements have made him unbelievably happy.

Jonathan, who plays the guitar too, said the duo often practice together.

“As a father, I can’t explain how proud and happy I am of James. I want to do everything I can to make sure that he can fulfil his dreams.”
