Edenvale police warn shoplifters following recent spike

“We will make sure that they feel the might of justice and consequences of their actions."

Edenvale SAPS issued a stern warning against shoplifters following a rise in the number of cases in the precinct.

Edenvale Police Station’s communication officer warrant officer Jacob Mashile said while many cases related to shoplifting are reported to the station, the suspects range in age.

The police warned that perpetrators would be arrested and brought to book.

“We will make sure that they feel the might of justice and the consequences of their actions. Edenvale SAPS together with its stakeholders will be monitoring all retailers around the CBD and malls,” said Mashile.

He said although suspects admit to theft and pay an admission of guilt fine when caught, the crime is still of concern to authorities.

Mashile said a petty crime can lead to bigger crimes.

“The police will still open a case of theft against the offender. This is placed on record, which means the individual sits with a criminal record.”

Mashile said Edenvale SAPS is pleading with the community and parents to curb this crime by discussing the consequences with their children.

“To have a criminal record can influence the rest of their lives,” said Msahile.
