School safety remains a priority for SAPS

“Crime, violence and abuse affect all aspects of our community and schools are not always free from fear, intimidation or victimisation.”

The safer schools programme continued with the focus on promoting safer schools and preventing the youth’s involvement in crime.

On October 17 a search was conducted at Edenglen High School.

The school was visited by Edenvale SAPS Sergeant Malesela Bopape (Social Crime Prevention Unit), Sergeant Tiny Mosehla (GBV co-ordinator), Warrant Officer Jacob Mashile (communications officer) and Captain Patrick Msimango (operational commander).

They were joined by private security personnel, Edenvale CPF as well as dogs who assisted with random searches at the school.

Warrant Officer Jacob Mashile, the communications officer of Edenvale SAPS.

Mashile said the visit was greatly appreciated and will be followed up continuously.

“School-based crime prevention is intended to enrich the participation of police officers in promoting safe and orderly school environments,” said Mashile.

He said school safety is often a critical obstacle to learning.

“Crime, violence and abuse affect all aspects of our community and schools are not always free from fear, intimidation or victimisation.”

He said the Mahlasela Department of Basic Education in partnership with the SAPS is committed to preventing, managing and responding to incidents of crime and violence in schools.

Mashile said prevention and early intervention are the most reliable and cost-effective ways to support schools in consistently delivering teaching and learning in an environment that is physically and socially safe.

He said schools are encouraged to establish and maintain a safe school committee.

Learners at the school line up waiting for their bags to be searched.

These committees comprise internal stakeholders of the school such as learners, educators, the school governing body (SGB) members and school security personnel.

External role players include the SAPS, EMPD, local ward councillors, social workers and CPFs.
