CoE urges locals to refrain from illegal dumping as fines might be imposed

Contamination of soil and water, which could lead to pollution of water resources and infertility of the land.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE), with the EMPD, is urging the public to refrain from illegal dumping and use the dumping sites allocated by the city.

Locals appear not to be utilising authorised dumping sites provided to them by the CoE, according to the EMPD.

According to the EMPD, illegal dumping has these health effects:

• Increased health problems, due to air pollution around that area plus viral diseases from infected animals like rats and skunks

• Properties around that area lose their value due to poor living conditions

• Contamination of soil and water, which could lead to pollution of water resources and infertility of the land

• Possible natural disasters because some chemical waste can be flammable and cause fires.

Some of the allocated dumping sites in Ekurhuleni include the Alberton area by AL rode Industrial, on Heidelberg Road between Dekenah Road and the Arch Bridge and in the Germiston area the Driehoek Industrial site, on Johann Rissik Road between Main Reef and Junction.

“As community members, we could keep our environment clean and safe if we could try a little harder, including getting used to the allocated municipal-controlled dumping sites.

“Help us as the city to stop the illegal dumping by reporting it and remember, a written notice amounting to R2 000 or more, depending on the area, could be issued to the person found committing such an offence,” stated the EMPD.

To report illegal dumping, dial the call centre on 086 453 000.
