Local dancers excel at championships

Kirstyn Walker was awarded the South African championship title for seniors at the South African Highland Dancing Championships.

Dancers from the Shaw-Butler Highland Dance Studio, trained by Merryl Hofmeyr, won top accolades at the South African Highland Dancing Championships.

They competed against dancers from Ireland, Scotland, Gauteng, the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape.

They walked away with 13 trophies, including the top studio award.

“Congratulations to Kirstyn Walker, who was awarded the South African championship title for the seniors, 16 to 18 age group, and securing second place in the Scottish National Premiership.

“Claire Thompson placed sixth in the 15 years and under championship,” said Hofmeyr.

Sheldon van Niekerk placed fourth in the adult 18 years and over category, while Megan Moore won the adult premier section and came fifth in the Scottish National Premiership.

Christine Alves won the novice section.
