Police arrest more than 129 suspects over long weekend

One of the joint operations conducted on September 22 saw four suspects arrested in Greenstone.

Over 129 suspects were arrested in Ekuruleni when crime prevention stakeholders worked together over the long weekend.

Acting communication officer for the SAPS Ekurhuleni district, Warrant Officer Jacob Mashile said they made the arrests throughout the Ekurhuleni district between September 22 to September 25.

According to Edenvale Community Policing Forum (CPF), Edenvale’s stakeholders received information regarding a group of suspects that intended to commit a possible armed robbery or hijacking.

They identified a vehicle that matched the description in Greenstone and after stopping it, the officers found four individuals inside.

They also recovered and confiscated two firearms, live ammunition and several other items.

“We found that all the firearms were unlicensed,” said Mashile.

In nearby Norkem Park, the officers arrested one suspect linked to a Hoedspruit cash-in-transit heist. They also found live ammunition in his possession.

Mashile said they arrested other suspects for various crimes ranging from possession of car-breaking tools, theft, possession of drugs, possession of suspected stolen property, rape, possession of ammunition, common robbery, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and suspected driving under the influence.

Ekurhuleni district commissioner General Anna Sithole applauded the members for their dedication and commitment to eradicating the unsavoury elements from society.

She encouraged the police members to continue strengthening their working relationships with other law enforcement agencies and collaborate closely with the community.
