Funraider for Cansa held at Glendower Conference Centre

The community comes together to support Cansa.

August 19 was no ordinary day at the Glendower Conference Centre, as the community rallied behind Marissa Burness, a finalist in the Mrs South Africa Pageant, in support of Cansa.

With flower crowns and refreshments in tow, attendees embraced the spirit of camaraderie and craftiness.

It was a day of unity, where women swapped worries for laughter, indulged in treats and let creativity bloom.

Marissa said her family’s history with cancer is what inspired the event.

“My family’s history with cancer runs deep, and I’ve witnessed its toll firsthand. The financial strain, the unyielding battle—it’s tough.

“I’ve seen loved ones struggle and I stand with them.

“Having fellow warriors in this room brings comfort and knowing someone cares can light up the darkest days,” she said.

The current Mrs South Africa’s second princess also showed her support by sharing her thoughts at the initiative.

Cansa representative Corrien Roro attended the event, expressed her gratitude to Marissa and thanked all those who supported the initiative.

She explained that Cansa’s commitment lies in offering essential community services and equally important providing the community with guidance encompassing education, support and research.

Marissa added, “When illness lingers, we often retreat, fearing we’ll burden others. But here, we find a haven, a space to share our pain and fears.

“In each other’s company, happiness sprouts, reminding us we’re never alone.”

Ward 18 Clr Heather Hart was one of the many supporters of the day.

“Women’s empowerment is close to my heart and Marissa is an example of what you can do if you put your mind to it.

Anyone is capable of stepping up to the plate and women have it in them to grow beyond where they currently are.

“This event is an example of how women can get together and have a fantastic afternoon, creating something beautiful,” said Hart.
