Homeowners should invest in protection against lithium-ion battery fires

“It is important that homeowners understand the potential risk of fire that comes with lithium batteries."

South Africa has seen a rapid rise in the popularity of alternative power solutions being installed in residences, as homeowners look for ways of ensuring a reliable source of power.

According to Fidelity Services Group CEO, Wahl Bartmann, Lithium-ion batteries have proven to be very well-suited for inverters because of their long life and high voltage.

“It is important that homeowners understand the potential risk of fire that comes with lithium batteries and how difficult they are to control.

“Such a fire cannot be contained by water or other traditional measures. Lithium-ion fires don’t burn cleanly and can vent toxic gases into the surrounding area,” said Bartmann.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission reported at least 25 000 lithium battery fires in the past five years.

Once alight, lithium-ion battery fires are very hard to extinguish, and the fire can burn very fiercely. In some circumstances, the battery can explode.

“If you have a problem with one cell it is very likely to start spreading. This unstoppable fire is called “thermal runaway”.

“If you have installed an inverter at home, we ask that you investigate whether your fire protection measures are adequate and whether they are suitable for lithium fires.

“Technology has helped in the development of a special product that can combat not just the flames but also the internal thermal reaction – an aspect of the fire that means it burns extremely hot and with the habit of spontaneously reigniting even after they have been extinguished,” he said.

Bartmann added that fire protection should be a key part of any home security system.
