Community cleans up Denver Park in honour of Madiba

“We just hope that by clearing this area it will draw some attention to our needs."

Community members and business owners took to Denver Park to clear the area of debris, overgrown vegetation and create a safer community as part of their 67 minutes for Mandela Day.

Supported by the municipality, SAPS and security companies, the group took to the park located below between Van Riebeeck and First avenues on July 18.

Edenvale SAPS sector managers Sergeants Moses Nematenda, Daniel Mabitsela, Milton Mampholo and Thadius Mabusa ready to lend a hand.

Described by ECID manager Linda McKenzie as a problematic area, the park is often overgrown and frequented by recyclers who make use of it to sort through and process collected items.Local resident Toni Zwicker said community members do not receive enough council support to resolve the matters and often maintain the park themselves.

“We just hope that clearing this area will draw some attention to our needs,” said Toni.

He said in the five years that he has lived in the area the problem has gotten exponentially worse.

Some of the community members, business owners, SAPS members, municipal staff and security personnel who assisted with the clean up.
