Learners are encouraged to partake and unleash their creative and imaginative skills.

Apart from a demonstration to Grade Eight learners, the girls are not given any formal instruction in the art of flower arranging.

The schools PRO, Carole Heming, said learners find that they have a natural talent and enjoy expressing themselves in this creative medium.

Girls are encouraged to enter as many of the categories of the show as possible and there are usually over 2000 arrangements submitted each year.

The seniors (Grades 10 to 12) may enter two to three homegrown blooms or choose from categories ranging from shades of green, city landscape, antique white, rainbow after the storm, sassy succulents, paper flowers, flowers for a pharaoh 100 years since the discovery of King Tutankhamen, Afro-beat and #MyDinaConnection, said Heming.

The categories for the juniors range from table centre-piece, shades of green, viva magenta, under the sea, arrangement in a teacup, my pretty pencil case, bees, birds and butterflies to South Africa the Rainbow Nation, unorthodox flowers (home-made flowers from paper, recycled material, crocheted flowers etc), and monsters that are to be made out of vegetables.

Every arrangement is judged, and the girls are awarded points for their houses.

Our judges are drawn from people who have been connected to the school and particularly to the flower show or people in the flower and garden business.

Our old girls can also take part in the flower show and we invite them to do their arrangements at the school between 15:00 and 18:00 on February 23 or bring in their arrangements between 07:00 and 09:00 on that Friday morning, she added.

Their arrangements form part of the inter-house competition. This years show is dedicated to the former headmistress, Dina Gon alves.
