Trio arrested for conspiracy to commit robbery in Jeppe

They searched the suspects and the vehicles and recovered a rifle and a magazine with 22 rounds.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Undercover Reaction Unit and Johannesburg SAPS Crime Intelligence arrested three men for conspiracy to commit a business robbery in Jeppe.

One of the three was positively identified via footage of a business robbery in Sebenza.

“The officers received information that the three suspects, aged between 46 and 59, were in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, at Jeppe Hostel on March 25,” said Xolani Fihla, the spokesperson for the JMPD.

It was alleged that they were planning to commit a business robbery.

The JMPD Undercover Commander mobilised a team and gathered information determining the description of the suspects and the vehicles they intended to use in the commission of a crime.

The officers spotted and stopped the vehicles, which matched the description, a white Toyota minibus and a Toyota Corolla.

They searched the suspects and the vehicles and recovered a rifle and a magazine with 22 rounds.

“The suspects failed to produce a firearm licence or a permit to possess the firearm. Upon further inspection, the officers discovered the rifle’s serial number was filed off.”

The trio was arrested and detained at the Jeppe SAPS. The two vehicles were seized and booked in at the SAPS Aeroton pound for further investigation.

The three were positively linked to various crimes in Gauteng.

The first suspect has a pending case of hijacking a motor vehicle, as per the Ivory Park SAPS.

The suspect linked to the Sebenza crimes was also sought for attempted murder on a Diepkloof case and had a pending case for the possession of an unlicensed firearm at the Jeppe SAPS.

The third suspect has a pending case of murder at the Moffatview SAPS.
