Sorting

Careful sorting of your washing will prevent fabric damage and dye transfer from non-colourfast fabrics. Ensure you make separate bundles of light and pastel colours, dark fabrics, and badly soiled articles.

The right wash programme

Familiarise yourself with the programmes on your machine by reading the manual. This will enable you to choose the right programme for the wash you’re doing. When washing a new garment, check the label for wash instructions. If in doubt, wash at a cool temperature.

Remember, delicate and woollen articles should be washed on specific wash programmes. Check what your machine’s manual recommends for your delicates, but as a rule of thumb, select ‘hand wash’, ‘delicate, or ‘gentle’.

For a general wash, choose a warm temperature of around 40°C. Very hot temperatures (60°C) can only be used if the garment label specifies high temperatures. Take heed of this because washing most fabrics at high temperatures can cause them to shrink or stretch.

Loading the drum

There is an art to how you put your washing in the machine. Be sure to load loosely by placing one garment in at a time and ensuring there’s room for the load to move in the drum. Overloading the machine can cause fabric damage and your washing will not be thoroughly cleaned.

Dosing

Stain removal

Older stains become difficult to remove so it is best to treat stains as soon as they happen. Always use cool water when treating stains because hot water can set them into the fabric. Pre-soaking the stained item in a mix of cool water and washing powder will loosen stains and stubborn dirt.
