Local league to host Girl Power Cup for Women’s Month

The sporting event aims to celebrate Women’s Day through sports and education.

The Lima League, a prominent organisation dedicated to promoting the empowerment of girls and women through sports and education, announced the second Annual Girl Power Cup on August 9.

This event, held in honour of Women’s Day, aims to prioritise girls’ physical and mental well-being while fostering educational opportunities.

The league believes in the power of sports to unlock possibilities for girls and women.

The organisation strives to boost confidence and self-esteem while reducing depression among girls and young women by providing participation opportunities in sports.

According to the event co-ordinator, Derrick Maphoru, their mission is to create a future where girls and women can play, be active, and realise their full potential.

“With a primary objective of increasing women’s participation in sports and closing the gender gap, the Lima League is committed to providing equal representation to women in sports.

“Through initiatives like the Girl Power Cup, the organisation aims to inspire girls to pursue their athletic passions while advocating for gender equality.

The Lima League invites all sports enthusiasts, supporters of gender equality, and the public to join the Annual Girl Power Cup as they celebrate Women’s Day through the transformative power of sports and education.

“The highly anticipated Girl Power Cup will take place at Nyiko Primary School, with the kick-off at 09:00. The Lima League expects 550 participants, representing 32 teams, to join the event,” said Maphoru.

Female celebrities will be guest speakers and engage participants in discussions at the event.

The Girl Power Cup promises outstanding sportsmanship and entertainment, further elevating the event.

Performances by artists such as Bizzcuit, Veena, DJ Thabithabs and others will ensure a lively atmosphere that celebrates the spirit and achievements of girls and women.
