Local centre to help unemployed launched

Deputy minister Boitumelo Moloi launches employment centres in Germiston and Johannesburg.

The Employment and Labour deputy minister opened two employment centres in Gauteng on July 7.
These centres are in Germiston and Johannesburg.

The Department of Employment and Labour deputy minister, Boitumelo Moloi, appealed to the community of Ekurhuleni to safeguard their newly operative and resourceful employment centres from criminal activities.

“Let us all look after these centres and mobile units. Let us guard them jealously from criminal elements that may want to strip them. Let us look after them for the sake of our work seekers and the future of Gauteng,” said Moloi.

“Young people in our communities need to be constantly engaged to prevent them from falling prey to substance abuse, which negatively impacts the user, their families and communities.

“The employment centres and our mobile units can be used to run education and awareness programmes and create an access point for life skills training,” said Moloi.

The opening of the two employment centres comes after the launching of 14 public employment services mobile buses of the Department of Employment and Labour at NASREC on July 6.

“We are not under any illusion that the two centres will solve all Ekurhuleni unemployment and poverty. Other players within government and the private sector need to hold our hands in addressing aspects such as improving education and skills development.

“We are hoping that we can use the employment centres and our mobile units as an active labour market intervention to bring greater collaboration with employers and training authorities in Gauteng,” said Moloi.

The Germiston Labour Centre is in the City of Ekurhuleni heartbeat, where the unemployment rate is currently at 33.4% – against the overall provincial unemployment stats. The employment centre is closer to several private and public colleges and other training service providers.

“Moreover, the employment centre would be able to provide the much-needed services to work-seekers in the broader Germiston, Boksburg, Benoni, Kempton Park, Katlehong, and Thembisa communities,” said Moloi.
