CoE urges residents to participate in prepaid electricity meter updates

Tokens that were purchased but not utilised before the deadline will be rendered invalid.

The City of Ekurhuleni continues to update its prepaid power meters to provide continuous electricity supply to its customers.

The project began in Edenvale and Nigel at the beginning of the month.

The city has already covered 78% of the meters in Edenvale and Nigel, and the focus will be turned to Benoni, Springs and the surrounding areas later this month.

According to CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, the current electricity meters will stop working automatically on November 24, 2024, due to a date rollover problem, unless each meter is changed.

“This means that after the deadline, citizens will no longer be allowed to load electricity on them.

“The Token Identifier (TID) rollover programme that the city is using to update the electricity meters will continue until November 24, 2024.

The public is reminded that while making the first purchase of electricity after the system settings, a client will be issued a receipt with three tokens, which must be entered in the order indicated on the receipt. It takes approximately two minutes to process the update.
