Magnificent flamingo return to local sanctuary
The largest recorded flock of Lesser Flamingos, in decades, have returned to the Korsmans Bird Sanctuary.
The water at Korsman Bird Sanctuary has been transformed into spectacular shades of pink by a flock of about 400 lesser flamingos to the pan following a two-year absence.

According to Jane Trembath, chairperson of the Korsman Conservancy, they last saw the birds in 2020.
Increased rainfall resulted in higher water levels in the pan may have prevented them from returning.
“Flamingos prefer shallower water,” she said.
“Fortunately, the water pump in the pan was reinstalled 18 months ago, allowing us to reduce the water levels to an acceptable depth, which makes the pan attractive for feeding.”

Trembath added while groups of attractive birds come and go throughout the day, this is one of the largest flocks spotted in the pan in decades.
“Flamingo movements are a bit of a mystery as they can travel great distances,” she said.
