He said the lack of working street lights on Main Reef and Hollins roads adds to safety problems, which encourage vehicle hijackings and robberies.

Residents raise concerns of bad odour coming from the Simmer and Jack Landfill Site.

He also raised objections to the unpleasant odour originating from the waste site, which he said poses health risks to residents.

City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said that the closing of the Rietfontein Landfill Site in Springs resulted in greater volumes of incoming rubbish to the Simmer and Jack Landfill Site.

“Machines on site were unable to handle the additional incoming waste, resulting in the formation of a waste compaction backlog, which is the primary cause of the odour,” said Dlamini.

“In the meantime, odour chemical spraying will be intensified and additional equipment will be deployed to address the backlog and assist with the influx of waste while the city works to operationalise all sites,” said Dlamini.

He urged residents to use the My CoE app or the call centre at 0860 543 000 to report any problems with streetlights.

The call will then be forwarded to the streetlight unit for a response when they get a reference number. According to Dlamini, streetlights in other sections of Simmerfields are often vandalised or have their cables and equipment stolen.

“The city will look into options for repairs and, if necessary, obtain financing to replace infrastructure for stolen streetlights.

“The city will evaluate the underlying reasons why the streetlights in the targeted area are not working,” said Dlamini.
