St George’s Village residents hit the streets for a walk

“Participants ranged in age from Chloe, 11 weeks old (in a pram) to Bert Cook, 102 years old in a wheelchair but he still does a daily short walk,”

With good weather predicted, Bedfordview-based St George’s Village held its first walkathon on May 6.

Seventy villagers, friends and family took part.

According to village manager Dominique Garrow, everyone enjoyed the day.

Carer, Patricia and 102-year-old Bert Cook.

The day was also a fundraiser for its new-look rondavel, which villagers use to play card games and also do yoga, hold meetings and parties.

Three routes were available. One for the more serious and able walkers, one for the ‘buggies’ and one for those using walkers and wheelchairs.

“Participants range from the young Chloe (11 weeks old in a pram), to Bert Cook, 102 years old in a wheelchair,” said Garrow.

She said the age gap between walkers was something special.

On the day residents, Gloria Rose raised over R7 500 by walking 3.6km. She is 94 years old.

Afterwards, many villagers spent the afternoon watching the Coronation of King Charles III. Cucumber sandwiches were available for their enjoyment.

Garrow said the walkathon could not have been a success without the help of the village’s sponsors and Bedfordview Athletics Club.

She said the runners helped by marshalling the route while Ward 19 Clr Jill Humphreys helped by allowing residents to cross Economides Road.

“A big thank you to all of you!”
