Community joins hands for a clean-up in Greenstone

The day went well with community members, customers and suppliers assisting with the clean-up.

Community members and a local business joined forces when they participated in a clean-up of several traffic islands in the Greenstone area.

On May 6, Stewarts and Lloyds Long Meadow Branch partnered with Essentially Edenvale to clean up the islands and improve the area.

Community members came out in their numbers to assist. Here are some of the volunteers who assisted with creating a garden on the traffic island.

It occurred at the islands near the Modderfontein Road and Van Riebeeck Avenue intersection.

Chantal Car, branch manager of pumps at Stewarts and Lloyds said the idea behind the day’s efforts was to clean up the area hand in hand with the community.

With the business premises so close to the intersection, she said the traffic islands were an eyesore, not only for the business but for the community at large.

Chantal said the day went well with community members, customers and suppliers assisting with the clean-up.

Jonathan Odell, branch manager of irrigation, echoed Chantal elation stating that the support had been fantastic.

He thanked everyone for their involvement and assistance.

Besides receiving assistance from numerous suppliers and businesses several schools lent a hand to make a difference.

Learners from Reddam House, St Benedict’s College, Boston College, Edenvale High School and Edenglen High all participated and assisted.

Seen at the clean-up are Michelle dos Santos, Chantal Car, Lisa Atkins, Ward Clr Heather Hart, Ward Clr DB Moloisane, Andrea Pearson and Jonathan Odell.

Chantal and Jonathan thanked everyone for their time and effort.

Besides transforming the area with succulents and the removal of debris and litter Edenvale CPF PRO Fiona Picket said injections, needles and other drug paraphernalia were removed from the area.

The organiser of the Essentially Edenvale volunteers Lisa Atkins said the clean-ups in Edenvale are gathering momentum.

She said the clean-up went well and was well supported.

Lisa said building on the success of the clean-ups, Essentially Edenvale was working towards obtaining NPO status.
