Bedfordview CPF upskill knowledge on safety

The community urged to be the eyes and ears and report any suspicious activities.

The joint training session held by BCI Security and Netcare on helicopter landing safety was an opportunity for the Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF) members to learn more about the subject.

The event took place in Kromdraai on February 5 and included lessons on dust management (fire department), first responder readiness and medical officer safety.

The head of patrollers, Jacques Steyn, said it is important to upskill themselves and keep in touch with what is happening.

Suspects were detained after they were caught tampering with infrastructure.

“A lot of times, helicopters have to come in and out to pick up patients. You need safe land zoning for it to land and know how to approach the helicopter if you need to.

“The chance you will ever approach it is slim, but it’s good to know. And also, what the regulations and the requirements are around it,” he explained.

He explained that helicopters pick up stroke and heart attack patients and gunshot victims.

He said being part of the BCPF is to be knowledgeable and able to pass that information to others.

“The session was insightful. Having these skills is crucial. I am planning a similar event at Rand Airport with other people,” said Steyn.

On February 3, they apprehended more than 10 men for tampering with infrastructure.

He said the culprits did not have the necessary paperwork or follow proper protocols.

“Not even health and safety protocol potentially endangering children, animals and pedestrians alike. The SAPS took them to the charge office and is investigating further.

“I think there’s a motive behind much of the vandalised infrastructure. I don’t think this is an odd person just stealing a piece of cable. It is pure sabotage,” he added.

He explained that Bedfordview is not as badly affected by the tampering of infrastructure as other areas.
However, he urges the community to remain vigilant and report suspicious behaviour.

“Everybody in the community must watch for this because it is in everyone’s best interest.

“So, if you see infrastructure being tampered with, speak to your local CPF or your local SAPS and get these guys arrested,” concluded Steyn.
