Letter: Resident concerned about the state of traffic lights in Greenstone

The resident demands action be taken regarding the state of Greenstone's traffic lights.

Dear Editor

I am very perturbed by the state of the traffic light maintenance in the Greenstone area, particularly the traffic lights at the intersections of Van Riebeeck Road and Stoneridge Drive, as well as the one between Van Riebeeck and Modderfontein Road, and also the one going onto the N3 highway from Modderfontein Road.

Sometimes the traffic lights are out of order for months before they are repaired.

Van Riebeeck Road is one of the few main arterial roads out of Edenvale that carries a lot of traffic, and the non-functioning traffic lights add an unnecessary burden to one’s travelling time.

I brought this to the attention of the Johannesburg Roads Agency, who passed the buck to the City of Ekurhuleni.

It seems that none of our authorities is keen to take responsibility for keeping our roads running smoothly, yet we keep paying rates and taxes.

And why are we even voting for our dishonourable councillors?

Something has to be done.

The intersections of Van Riebeeck Avenue and Modderfontein Road and one going onto the N3 from Modderfontein Road fall under the City of Johannesburg’s (CoJ) jurisdiction.

Therefore the CoE cannot maintain those intersections.

All enquiries about these intersections should be addressed to the CoJ.

Concerning the intersection of Van Riebeeck Avenue and Stoneridge Drive, the CoE is aware of the constant outage of the traffic signal, which is caused by old cables with multiple joints.

ALSO READ: Many Greenstone collisions are attributed to speeding

(The contributing factors to these multiple joints are cable theft and rain).

The best way to solve the problem is by re-cabling the intersection with new cables.

The target for addressing this challenge is the last quarter of this financial year.
