The canoeist has won several awards and finished in top positions for many years.

The Edenvale resident recently took part in the Dark Challenge held in the Underberg, a two-day 40km white water river race on the Umzimkhulu River.

Wayne Jacobs has been named male paddler of the year.

Securing position 154, he described the challenge as exciting, navigating daring rocky sections and treacherous corners.

He finished the two days race in a time of 5:29:58 as the 138 finisher and the sixth sub grand master age category finisher.

“I was in no hurry as I was leading a novice to the river, showing the lines to take and ensuring I had a successful race, as I often do,” he said.

Another canoeist Colin Wilson, CEO at Euro Steel, was presented with his Gauteng Canoe Union colours for marathon racing at the Gauteng Canoe Union Awards presentations.

The event took place on January 21 at the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club based at Emmarentia Dam.

Wayne Jacobs was named male paddler of the year. He is also sponsored and wears the Euro Steel colours.

The announcement was made following his successful marathon races, flat water races, and international racing tours.

Jacobs participated in a three-day 120km river race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban in 2021, finishing 16th overall and winning the veteran’s category.

He then took part in the Umkomaas Canoe Marathon with Euro Steel teammate, Hank McGregor, who is a top South African paddler, in a full exciting wild water race.

He managed to secure his third win.
