These festivities bring joy to many but also cause increased traffic volumes and road crash incidents.

All drivers should check their vehicles regularly to ensure that everything is in good working order, both inside and out.

Performing a pre-trip inspection on your vehicle can not only ensure your safety but also the safety of other road users.

Here are the EMPD’s guidelines for performing daily pre-trip inspections:

• Tyres

Whenever you approach your vehicle, look at the tyres to ensure that they are not deflated.

Also, check that all valve caps are in place and that there are no objects such as nails or pieces of wire protruding from any of the tyres.

You should check for serious damage to the tyre walls.

• Number plates

If your number plates are loose, they could fall off during your daily commute.

Ensure that you have a number plate affixed to the front and the back of your vehicle.

Failure to display your number plate correctly will lead to a fine being issued to you.

• Lights and indicators

Check if the lights and indicator lenses are cracked or broken. If there is any obvious damage, it would be wise to have the items repaired or replaced as soon as possible.

• Bodywork

Inspect your vehicle for any noticeable damage.

This could include a loose bumper, side mirror or window beading.

Make sure that the fuel filler flap is closed and still in position.

Any loose items could come off completely during your drive and cause damage to your vehicle, as well as cause a road crash incident.

• Windscreen and windows

Check for damage to the windscreen or other windows.

Remember that a small chip could potentially become a big crack, having it fixed will prevent any future safety issues.

Also, check that your windscreen wipers are in good working order.

• Under the vehicle
Inspect underneath the vehicle for any obvious oil and water leaks or obstructions.
These could be an indication of loose engine hoses and worn-out seals.
If there are noticeable leaks, fluids and oil will need to be topped up.
Take your vehicle to a mechanic who will identify the cause of the problem.

• Interior

Before you drive off, check for obstructions by your feet before checking the pressure of the clutch and brake pedals.

Make sure that all the gauges work and keep an eye out for any warning lights that might come on when you turn the key in the ignition.
