Edenglen cyclist hope to make a difference

“We cater to all levels and support healthy, environmentally friendly activities and we are totally unaffected by load-shedding and petrol price hikes.”

Edenglen Cycling Club members marked the last official club ride of the year by cleaning out their cupboards to collect previously loved cycling kits for cyclists in need.

Through the effort 33 cycling shirts, 22 bib shorts, as well as various other cycling-related items were collected.
The club held its last ride on December 10.

The club which has been in existence for close to 20 years was formed by a group of friends who used to meet outside the former Edenglen Health and Racket Club.

Now it meets on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 06:00 at Malagueta.

While Covid-19 saw a surge in the number of community members purchasing bicycles and hitting the road, Edenglen Cycling Club was restricted from gathering in large numbers.

However, with Covid now behind us, the club is growing in numbers and provides a safe environment for cyclists of varying abilities.

Benefits of being part of a club include:

• Being more visible to motorists when cycling in a group.

• Improving fitness levels through regular riding.

• Being part of a social environment.

• Clubs cater for cyclists of all abilities.

Highlighting the current condition of the roads, the club stated cycling can be difficult.

In light of this club chairpersons, Tyrone and Angela de Longchamps requested road users to stay wider of the cyclist and be considerate and respectful.

“During the week, most of us try to get off the roads before 06:15 because we are aware of the danger of sharing the road with drivers who are distracted, focused on getting to work or school and have limited patience to accommodate us,” said Angela.

“However, on the weekends, we urge all motorists to rather join us, than collide with us.”

The club is a non-profit community group.

“We cater to all levels and support healthy, environmentally friendly activities and we are unaffected by load-shedding and petrol price hikes.”

Cyclists, who are not part of the club and who have unwanted cycling kits in a good condition, can donate them at Ridgeway Cycles, Greenstone, a sponsor of the club.
