Humphreys urges residents to recycle waste

"We need new technology systems in place because it costs more to repair the current system."

Ward 20 Clr Jill Humphreys is urging residents to use more environmentally friendly methods to minimise waste generation.

She said this in light of the current refuse collection woes in the city while addressing other service delivery-related issues.

She said it is time for people to ‘think hard’ about recycling and the use of bioremediation as landfill sites are full.

She retaliated that it is due to these reasons that there’s a need to implement bioremediation as it is a natural process, cost-effective and can be applied throughout the metro.

Humphreys said the ward hasn’t been effectively functioning due to financial issues the metro is faced with.

She said the lack of finances has made it difficult to provide and maintain service delivery in the ward.

“No contractors have been appointed for grass cutting, which has affected parks and the general maintenance of the area. This is due to a lack of trucks and simply not having the capacity to do so.”

She blamed some of the issues on corruption and sabotage.

“It is difficult for councillors to achieve their goals in their respective wards.”

She touched on the water and sanitation challenges affecting residents as well.

“No maintenance has been done on infrastructure in the last 27 years.

“We need new technology systems in place because it costs more to repair the current system.

“The old pipes are vulnerable, we need to replace them but can’t afford it,” she added.

On the issue of road infrastructure, this is what she had to say, “There’s no single road in the area that doesn’t need to be repaired. However, we were able to resurface a section on van Buuren via Nickel Road.”

She also praised the residents of Bedfordview for their selflessness and contribution to ensuring the ward keeps its status quo.

• Recycling tips for residents

The most toxic product of landfill sites is the creation of leachate. If wet organic matter is separated at the source, there will be no leachate.

What can you do? If you’re in an apartment block or a complex, arrange with your body corporate to have separate collections.

If your wet (organic) waste is properly binned and sealed and collected regularly, there will be no smell, no rats, and no mess.

Most other material is then available for easy recycling.
