The socio-economic development partnership between Rand Refinery and the Department of Education kicked off with two schools in Germiston receiving crucial water, sanitation and infrastructure upgrades.

Rand Refinery, in partnership with the Department of Education handed over new ablution facilities at two schools in Germiston.

During the handover of the facilities at Laerskool Germiston Primary School, Rand Refinery CEO Praveen Baijnath said that the partnership aimed to ensure children receive the basic facilities to create a conducive learning environment.

“Laerskool Germiston’s learners have basins, urinals, chambers and water closets, while current asbestos ablutions have been replaced with new prefabricated ablution facilities,” said Praveen.

In a follow-up handover at Galway Primary School, which caters for 1 300 students, the joint project delivered new prefabricated ablution facilities.

The partnership has the broad aim to assist six schools in the Germiston area and focused on water and sanitation projects.

The total value is circa R5.6m.
