On October 21 residents and staff set off as they travelled the globe to enjoy the sounds, sights and flavours of France.

Rand Aid’s manager of recreational programmes, Debbie Christen said signage for the café was erected at the recreation centre’s entrance while black, white and hot pink French décor was put in place.

The tables were set with crisp white tablecloths, black and white table runners, hot pink roses, black paper French poodles and replicas of the Eiffel Tower.

French music from Midnight in Paris, Yves Montand and his Songs of Paris and Édith Piaf’s La Vie en Rose album all added to the ambience, leaving residents feeling they were in the 1950s and 60s Paris.

Food on offer included croissants with butter and cheese, mini quiches, chocolate éclairs and lemon sponge cake.
Not shying away from the fun the recreation team stepped up as waitresses.

They took each resident’s order on an old-fashioned guest check and promptly served them their refreshments.

“The residents were delighted with their outing to the French Café,” said Debbie.

She said they felt as if they were actually in a restaurant and were happy to order what they wanted.

“They were also very pleased when presented with their guest check and told that their French refreshments were complimentary,” said Debbie.

“When leaving the café, the residents said how much they enjoyed their French experience and thanked the waitresses for the food and service.”
