Better Bedfordview gets the ball rolling for spring

"Golfers can also invite family and friends to enjoy the dinner and entertainment at R300 per person."

While residents have been spring cleaning their homes and gardens, the Better Bedfordview team has been spring cleaning the suburb, including paving, painting, planting, tidying up and fixing potholes.

Founded by RAG (Residents Action Group Bedfordview) and relaunched as a stand-alone, non-profit, community organisation Better Bedfordview is going from strength to strength, said chairperson Marina Constas.

“Since its relaunch on June 1, Better Bedfordview has fixed more than 180 potholes,” she said.

“Better Bedfordview recently repaired paving in Hawley Road and it is now a pleasure to walk on. The team will soon move on to do paving repairs on Van Buuren Road.

Plants are thriving.

“We have been painting speed bumps, including on Kloof Road. These are now visible and safer for road users.

“Better Bedfordview has been gardening, too. Plants donated by caring residents have been planted and are now thriving in previously untidy, neglected spaces, including on Van Buuren Road.”

In addition to general clean-ups and suburb maintenance, Better Bedfordview has tackled ad-hoc disasters, such as when a truck dumped a pile of rubbish into a vacant stand on the corner of Nicol and Van der Linde roads.

“The illegal dumping was seen by an alert security guard, but the truck sped away. It was later discovered to have a false number plate.

“The Better Bedfordview clean-up crew noticed the mess and quickly cleaned it up. If we allow this to become the norm and do not act, our area will deteriorate beyond a point of no return,” Constas said.

Better Bedfordview depends on funding and support from community-minded residents and businesses to clean up Bedfordview and restore roads, parks, pavements and public places.

Better Bedfordview’s initiative to repair potholes in Bedfordview has been endorsed by the City of Ekurhuleni and received a substantial sponsorship from Afrihost.

“With more funding, we can do more and continue to grow the Better Bedfordview clean-up team,” Constas said.

The organisation will host a fundraising golf day on October 28 at Glendower Golf Club.

“This is going to be a super-fun golf day with awesome prizes. Played on one of the top golf courses in South Africa, and all proceeds are going to Better Bedfordview to clean up and restore our suburb.

“The cost of R6 000 per four-ball includes a delicious seafood buffet dinner, prize giving and a festive evening with live music.

“Golfers can also invite family and friends to enjoy the dinner and entertainment at R300 per person,” said Constas.
