On September 16 the clinic’s acute physical rehabilitation unit hosted a sports day for their spinal cord injury patients.

The therapy team, consisting of physiotherapists and occupational therapists, arranged various fun-filled activities for the patients and staff.

Natasha Griffin marketing and communications for Life New Kensington Clinic said wheelchair races, throwing of bean bags and cup blowing had the car park filled with cheer and laughter.

“The aim was also to provide education on spinal cord injuries, which was beautifully presented by the Wits students to the patients, staff and families in attendance.

“The day was a great success, leaving the patients and family members encouraged and motivated to continue living a normal life with their spinal cord injuries.”

It intends to create awareness amongst the community.

Natasha explained that spinal cord injury and the resultant paralysis have devastating physical, mental, social, sexual and vocational consequences for the injured.

She said the injury increases the economic burden on the person who sustains an SCI and potentially his or her support network.
