Edenvale Bowling Club voted Ekurhuleni Club of The Year

Edenvale Bowling Club excelled when it was recently voted Ekurhuleni Club of The Year.

According to committee member Raymond Pieters, this occurred over the weekend of September 15 and 17.

Besides being announced the club of the year, Edenvale had three winners in the Champion of Champions bowls tournament.

The Hillside Bowling Club from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe was recently hosted at Edenvale Bowling Club.

Mathews Phiri won the men’s open singles, Martin Muller the men’s Veterans singles and the evergreen Jenny Jones won the ladies’ veterans tile.

Pieters said throughout the year Edenvale bowlers have shown that they can compete at the highest level.

From 30s to veterans, names such as Greg Burns, Brandon Wysoke, Elizan Du Toit, Gordon May, Gerald May, Mathews Phiri, Nic Botha, Sheila Buncombe and Jenny Jones were always in the mix when it came to top-class competitions.

The Ekurhuleni inter-district squad was named and Edenvale has several representatives.

The A-team includes Greg Burns (skip), Gordon May (lead), Mathew Phiri (lead) and Brandon Wysoke (second).

The B team members are Sean Waters (third) and Nic Botha (third), while the veteran men team members are Gerald May (skip) and Martin Muller (lead).

Charmaine Gardiner was chosen to play in the EKB district women’s open, while Zune Waters was chosen for the B-side and Sheila Buncombe for the ladies veterans.

Pieters said the club recently hosted the Hillside Bowling Club from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

“Friendly matches were played where fun and friendship were more important than the result,” said Pieters.
He said Edenvale is known to be an innovative club.

“With Covid-19 now hopefully a thing of the past, the club hosts many competitions throughout the year. It is open to all bowlers from all clubs,” said Pieters.

These include Perch Pairs, Twilight Bowls, Graham McKenzie Memorial, weekly tabs competitions such as ‘The Competitive Edge’ and many more to keep members interested.

The club welcomes new members of all ages.
