17 Ekurhuleni learners left injured after taxi crash

"The car swerved off the road without stopping, began to roll and was eventually hauled up close to the bridge."

A Toyota Quantum was involved in a crash in Thembisa’s Phomolong sector, close to Birch Acres Mall, on August 29 at about 16:00.

The Quantum is said to have been carrying students from Chloorkop and Birch Acres primary schools.

“The driver is believed to have lost control of his car after the vehicle’s tire burst while he was travelling on Andrew Mapheto Drive toward Thembisa close to the mall,” said Marie Mashishi, a media liaison officer for the EMPD.

“The car swerved off the road without stopping, began to roll and was eventually hauled up close to the bridge. The 17 learners, who were passengers, suffered minor to major injuries and were taken by ambulance to the closest hospital.

“The EMPD appeals to all drivers who transport students to and from school to make sure that their vehicles are always roadworthy,” said Mashishi.
