Ekurhuleni crime operations bring 400 suspects to book

Suspects were arrested for offence such as rape, murder, robbery, fraud, sexual assault, domestic violence, malicious damage to property.

A multidisciplinary operation, Okae Molao, joined another operation based on celebrating women on August 20 in Ivory Park.

Operation Basadi was aimed at assisting the police station with the reduction of crime, which resulted in over 400 suspects being arrested.

Firearms and ammunition recovered in places like Reigerpark, Thembisa South, Brakpan, Elsburg, and Ivory Park.

“In their pursuit to address serious and violent crimes, SAPS women united with Ekurhuleni District, supported by their male colleagues as well as other law enforcement agencies to conduct operations from Friday afternoon until Sunday morning,” said Ekurhuleni SAPS District communications officer Captain Neldah Sekgobela.

Sekgobela said the operations included stop-and-searches, vehicle checkpoints, visits to taverns and roadblock duties.

Suspects were arrested for rape, murder, robbery with a weapon other than a firearm, fraud, sexual assault, domestic violence, malicious damage to property, bribery, conspiracy to commit murder, trespassing and possession of stolen property.

Police operations resulted in over 400 suspects being arrested.

“Criminals and opportunistic criminals had their space invaded as law enforcement agencies, led by the SAPS, descended on Ivory Park for operations Okae Molao,” said Ivory Park SAPS communications officer Captain Ben Matimulane.

Matimulane said during Operation Okae Molao, a total of 63 suspects, including one for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, were arrested.

He said 32 were nabbed after they were found to be in the country illegally and 28 for driving motor vehicles while under the influence of liquor.

“As the Ivory Park SAPS, we welcome these interventions from our colleagues,” said Brigadier Ngcobo.

“The police in Ekurhuleni District is serious about removing illegal firearms off the streets. Firearms and ammunition were recovered in places like Reigerpark, Thembisa South, Brakpan, Elsburg, and Ivory Park.”

During the operations on August 20 in Ivory Park, members of Crime Intelligence, who were part of the provincial operation, received information about the owner of a spaza shop who was in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“The place was visited and the owner of the spaza shop was nabbed with an unlicensed firearm and seven rounds of ammunition in his possession,” said Sekgobela.

Ekurhuleni District commissioner Major General Anna Sithole commended members for their efforts to address unlicensed firearms in the district and thanked community members who work with the police to combat crime.
