Set to be introduced in September, the incentive aims to assist customers who are in arrears with their municipal accounts.

CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini emphasised that the city’s Debt Rehabilitation Incentive is not automatic.

He said customers will have to apply for relief and qualifying customers will receive the incentive, which will run from September 1 to March 31 next year.

Outlining the incentive, MMC for Finance, Economic Development, and ICT Clr Fanyana Nkosi said it comprises a 50% write-off of debt more than one year from the date of application approval.

Nkosi said the write-off will include rates, service charges, interest and other costs.

“The balance of the account on the date of application approval, excluding the current account and amount after the 50% write-off, will be placed in a consolidated arrangement account to be written off incrementally over three years,” said the MMC.
