There are amazing prizes up for grabs for winners of this year’s competition.

“It is that time of year again. Spring is almost here,” said Better Bedfordview chairperson Marina Constas.

“Now is the time to start preparing our gardens and pavements, and we invite all residents to take part in our third annual competition.”

The competition was launched three years ago by Better Bedfordview to help uplift and beautify the suburb and has gone from strength to strength.

“We can all make a positive difference in our suburb by looking after our pavements,” Constas said.

Better Bedfordview is also looking for prize sponsors for this year’s competition.

Constas appealed to community-minded businesses and residents to contribute a prize or voucher, and “show that your business cares about uniting and uplifting our community and making Bedfordview better, cleaner, greener and more beautiful”.

They stressed that preparing for a spring garden begins with a proper spring clean.

Here are some top gardening tips from Better Bedfordview:

• To have a lovely, lush lawn in spring and summer, now is the time to scarify your grass if it has developed a thick, untidy thatch.

• Lawns that have become hard and compacted should be spiked with a fork.

• Apply lawn dressing now.

• Cut back shrubs which have grown out of shape and where branch edges have died off from the deadly frost that we experienced this winter.

• Take out all annuals which have done their winter show and get ready to replace them with spring and summer plants.

• Perennials need to be cut back as they will regrow when the warm days of summer arrive.

• In late August, prune fuchsias by half and fertilize them.

• Plants need nourishment now and require loads of compost, which should be layered onto all the flower beds.

• Next comes the most important part of gardening, which is fertilizing the beds.

• The fertilizer to use for most plants is 3:1:5.

• August is feeding month, and all plants need to be fed.

• Feed hydrangeas and remember to feed your roses. Remember that azaleas, camelias and gardenias are all acid-loving plants, so they need the appropriate fertilizer.

• A good watering of the beds ends the preparation.

• Next is the exciting part, which is adding plants to your garden.

• When buying your plants, take note of the conditions where you will be planting your seedlings, shrubs or trees. You must consider this when buying the plants.

• You should know the plants’ ideal location, watering and light requirements to ensure that they thrive.

• Continual trimming back, feeding and watering of your garden will provide you with a beautiful spring and summer garden and a pavement that could win the competition.
