Community support keeps Edenvale Care Centre open

“We often wonder how we are going to keep our doors open, but with the support and help of the community we manage to do it."

Edenvale Care Centre thanked the community for its continued support and assistance after it received donations in recent weeks – most for Mandela Day initiatives.

The administrator of the care centre, Marlene Hooper, said they received donations from Rand Aid and Greenstone-based Redemption Church.

“We often wonder how we are going to keep our doors open, but with the support of the community we manage,” said Marlene.

Two of the handmade teddies and a blanket were donated to Edenvale Care Centre Hospice by Rand Aid.

She said Rand Aid held a Mandela Day initiative for the Hospice and collected donations from the residents of its facilities.

“We received beautifully handmade teddy bears, blankets and groceries from the organisation’s residents.”
Redemption Church donated linen, blankets and other items to the centre.

During July the care centre also hosted a fundraiser for medium-sized adult diapers.

Initially, the centre set out to raise enough funds to purchase 67 bags of diapers, but at the end of the campaign, enough funds were donated to purchase 107 bags of nappies.

Fundraiser for Edenvale Care Centre Hospice, Sam Atrash, said the campaign went well and the centre was happy with the support from the community.

“Receiving donations reduces the expense of our monthly overhead costs,” said Marlene.

To further raise funds the care centre will host another mini-market and blood donation drive in August.

Set for August 20, the event will be held in partnership with South African National Blood Services.

It will be hosted at the centre, located at 55 Sixth Avenue.

Held to raise funds the event will also give the community a chance to learn more about the 13-bed centre. The community can expect stalls, food and beverages on sale on the day.

The centre’s first event of this kind was in June.

The centre started hosting events like this to give back to the community and share information.

Community members who are planning to visit are encouraged to ask staff questions to learn as much as possible about the centre on the day.
