The increased security measures aim to reduce the damage caused by multiple power outages.

The spokesperson for the CoE, Zweli Dlamini, said theft and vandalism of electrical infrastructure frequently occur during load-shedding.

He said private security companies were appointed and technology introduced to complement the work already done by the city’s metro police officers.

“These additional security measures secure infrastructure such as substations and cables which are mostly targeted,” said Dlamini.

These plans were revealed by MMC for Water, Sanitation and Energy Senzi Sibeko during a community meeting in Kempton Park on July 7.

The meeting was held to update the community on the steps taken by the city to reduce power outages.

“We have experienced a high number of cases of vandalism on our infrastructure,” said Sibeko.

“In some cases, vandals cut down streetlight poles and leave them without taking anything.”

According to Sibeko, theft and vandalism have become a trend in municipalities across the country.
