Transnet cables recovered and one suspect arrested in Elandsfontein

One man working as a manager for a scrap metal business was arrested in Elandsfontein for tampering with essential infrastructure.

He was arrested after members of the SAPS provincial head office followed up on information.

“Officers received a tip-off that two vehicles were scheduled to off-load materials belonging to Transnet at a business in Elandsfontein.

“They followed up the information and on arrival at the company, they were denied access to the premises,” Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Lillian Modiga said.

Inside the premises, officers recovered wires belonging to Transnet to the estimated value of R10m.

 

She added that the officers introduced themselves and the reason for their visit as compliance inspectors, but they were still denied access.

“The officers then called in members of the Ekurhuleni District Flash Office and role players for back-up before they managed to enter the property.”

“The 34-year-old manager of the company was asked to produce the papers for his business.

“He allegedly gave officers fraudulent papers,” Modiga said.

The man was arrested and detained at the Bedfordview Police Station.

He will appear in court soon on charges of tampering with essential infrastructure.
