The operation was targeted at liquor outlets around the city.

A raid that lasted into the night saw nine people arrested and one local tavern closed due to non-compliance.

Among those arrests at Howe Circle in Sunnyridge, Primrose, were two people apprehended for possession of dagga, while five people were arrested for possession of and dealing in illegal cigarettes with a total value of R450 000.

According to Moseki, officers were allegedly handed R5 000 in cash as a bribe.

One suspect was also arrested on charges of possession and dealing in illegal cigarettes with the value of R157 000.

One driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police also raided several liquor outlets in Primrose and a tavern on President Street had its stock confiscated.

According to the MMC, officers went to the tavern 30 minutes earlier and requested the workers to shut down.

“Thirty minutes later the police returned to the same tavern to find people still inside the tavern with business operating as usual despite the warning,” Moseki said.

“The police decided to confiscate the tavern’s stock due to non-compliance of a liquor license,” said Moseki.

Moseki said the operation was in line with tackling crime in Ekurhuleni and returning crime fighting back to basics.

“We are claiming every street of Ekurhuleni. We want to clamp down on every incident of lawlessness in our city,” said the MMC.
